Neokaisareia: Village Churches and Cultural History
Accommodation in Neokaisareia
In Neokaisareia, churches, a historic village museum and a traditional festival custom tell different stories about the place. The Church of Saint Basil was built by villagers in 1960. There is also a cemetery church with a monastic past. Those interested in the history and culture of the village will find tangible points of interest here, without any one building having to tell the whole story of the place.
Churches and Village Tradition
The restored katholikon of a monastery dedicated to the Synaxis of the Archangels now serves as the village cemetery church. A katholikon is the main church of a monastery; here, the term points to the building’s former monastic function. The Church of Saint Basil represents a different chapter in the village’s history: it was built in 1960 through the efforts of the villagers.
A festival custom is also associated with the Church of Saint Basil. A 2016 academic study describes the village festival as a tradition that, according to the study, took place every August in the church courtyard.
A Museum and a Dated Cultural Event
The “Βιωματικό Μουσείο Ανθρώπων προς Φυγήν” is housed in the old stone primary school building. The event “Νέος Τόπος Ίδια Ψυχή,” held in Neokaisareia on 7 July 2024, featured Cappadocian music, dances and food. Three exhibitions were held on the museum’s surrounding grounds during the event.
A Different Perspective on Ioannina
The wider destination of Ioannina offers further, distinct themes. The Pamvotis Lake Information Centre is located on Ioannina Island in a traditional, listed stone building. It presents information about the lake’s plants and the fish, birds, amphibians and mammals that live there. If you would like to visit the centre, you can check the visiting arrangements in advance. Ioannina Island is one of only two inhabited lake islands in Greece; its village is designated a settlement of outstanding natural beauty and probably dates from the 16th century.
Ioannina Castle also offers several distinct historical perspectives. It stands on a naturally fortified rocky peninsula; archaeologically discovered traces of settlement date back to the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The castle is also considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited fortified settlements in Greece. Within the castle are the Byzantine Museum in the southeastern acropolis of Itch Kale and the Silversmithing Museum in the western bastion tower of the northeastern acropolis of Its Kale. The Byzantine Museum displays silverware in the so-called Treasury and an exhibition on the city’s history in the Fethiye Mosque. At the Silversmithing Museum, visitors can learn about traditional techniques for shaping and decorating silver objects.
Other facets of Ioannina range from underground caves to lakeside paths. Caves within the castle citadel, formerly used as warehouses and prisons, can be accessed from there; check current local access conditions before visiting. The Perama Cave Visitor and Reception Centre includes audiovisual materials and rare palaeontological finds. For outdoor activity, two distinct route features are described in the wider destination: an established 30-kilometre circuit around Pamvotis Lake and a walking and cycling path from Mavili Square to the village of Katsikas. Ioannina’s old market retains its commercial character and is one of the city’s liveliest streets.
