Skala Marion: Coves, Beaches and Village History
Accommodation in Skala Marion
Skala Marion on the west coast of Thasos stretches across three coves, each with a small sandy beach. This harbour and coastal village offers a variety of beach areas, as well as a history reflected in its old houses. When choosing a base for your holiday, both the atmosphere of each beach and your interest in the village’s architecture may therefore play a role.
Coves and Beaches in Skala Marion
Platanes is one of the three beaches along Skala Marion on the west coast of Thasos. The largest of the three beach areas is at the entrance to the village, looks out over the Aegean Sea and has fine pebble sand. The water at Platanes is shallow; the beach is a little quieter and more secluded than Skala Marion beach. Visitors can swim in the blue water of the cove.
A beach bar on a small stretch of Platanes serves food and drinks and offers sun loungers and umbrellas. Most of the beach is open for public use. As beach facilities may change, check what is available on site. Atspas is a fully organised beach with water sports facilities; confirm their availability before making plans.
At the village exit, a cove with fine golden sand and clear water provides another place to swim. In the heart of the village is the small harbour, which is also Skala Marion beach. The three coves give the village different stretches of coastline, without making any single type of beach the standard.
Old Houses and History
The preserved old houses of Skala Marion feature carved ceilings and colourful balcony corbels. These projecting balcony supports and the ceilings are considered examples of the region’s former economic prosperity. Until 1926, the Athos monasteries of Karakalou, Ksiropotamou and Stavronikita had dependencies in Skala Marion. The architecture and monastic history thus add a historical dimension to the village alongside its beach coves.
There is also an archaeological point of interest nearby: about 1 km east of Skala Marion, a sign from the Archaeological Service marked “Fari” points along a forest track to excavations where an ancient pottery workshop was uncovered. If you are following the sign, check the starting point on site.
More Things to Explore on Thasos
Beyond Skala Marion, Thasos offers its own natural and cultural attractions. The island has numerous footpaths for walks of ecological and cultural interest. In the southeast of Thasos, the archaeological site of Aliki lies next to Aliki beach. It includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD.
The Ancient Agora is also part of Thasos’s history: it was the political, social, religious and economic centre of ancient Thasos. In Limenas, the 3.5 km historic trail leads through the ancient city, on whose site Limenas was built. Check trail conditions before setting out.
