Stalós brings together contrasting landscapes: a mountainous district, a district by the sea, and a long sandy beach. It also offers historical insights into village life in the past. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Stalós, these features can help you get a feel for the character of the area as you plan your holiday.

Two districts, one destination

Stalós consists of Pano Stalos and Kato Stalos. Pano Stalos is the mountainous district, while Kato Stalos lies by the sea. When choosing where to stay, you can consider which of these settings better suits your preferences: the mountainous landscape or the seaside location. This distinction gives you a concrete starting point for planning, without treating the two districts as the same.

A sandy beach with different areas

The sandy beach of Stalós is 2 km long. It has sections with sun loungers and parasols, as well as quieter areas of sand. Organised beach sections and quieter areas are therefore part of the same coastline. Which of them shapes your day at the beach may be a deciding factor when choosing a base for your holiday. Beach facilities may change; if particular areas are important to your plans, check the current situation before your visit.

Getting to the beach

Stalós beach can be reached by taxi, car, or bicycle. It is also regularly served by Chania’s public bus service. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Village life and crafts in the past

Historically, most residents lived in Pano Stalos; only a few lived in the village’s barren coastal area. This former settlement pattern connects the mountainous district and the coast in a historical context, without describing them as comparable residential areas.

A traditional craft was also part of Stalós’s history: some families in Kato Stalos made bricks and roof tiles and fired them in traditional, manually operated kilns. The products and firing method offer a tangible insight into the area’s past.

Culture and landscape across the wider Chania destination

The wider Chania destination brings together other cultural themes. Chania’s Old Town features Venetian mansions, old hammams, minarets, and churches along its historic streets. The Venetian Harbour was built in the 14th century for trade and to protect against pirate raids. The Δημοτική αγορά of Chania is a landmark of the city for both locals and visitors.

The Archaeological Museum of Chania also offers a distinct perspective on the regional unit: its permanent exhibition comprises three ground-floor galleries and one upstairs gallery. They display archaeological finds from the Chania regional unit spanning several centuries. In this way, the architectural traces of the Old Town and harbour are complemented by a broad archaeological perspective across time.

Theriso is another historical destination. During the 1905 Revolution under Eleftherios Venizelos, the village served as the seat of the Cretan insurgents. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Theriso is located in the former headquarters building of Venizelos and the 1905 Theriso Movement. The Eleftherios Venizelos Gorge, through which you reach the historic village, is 6 km long in total.

The Akrotiri landscape offers a different focus: the peninsula has small coves and beaches suitable for recreation and tourism. Nature in the northern hills remains largely undisturbed by human activity. The landscape is home to rich, partly endemic flora, as well as land and sea caves with endemic invertebrates. On the acropolis of Falassarna, finds—mostly from the Archaic period—were unearthed in the central area of the ancient Temple of Demeter. The wider Chania destination also offers nature and cultural attractions.
