Aptera sits above the southern side of Souda Bay, with views across the bay and the Apokoronas plain. Today, Aptera is a settlement of scattered houses with a church at its center. Nearby are archaeological remains from different periods: a theater, a Roman townhouse, cisterns, and a monastery. Landscape and historical development thus stand side by side as two distinct but equally defining aspects of the area. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Aptera, this is a helpful starting point: would you like the elevated setting and its views to shape your vacation, or are you mainly interested in the ancient buildings and the history of urban life?

Ancient city and Roman life at home

The theater of Aptera was built from local fossil-bearing limestone, near the southeastern gate of the ancient city. A large Roman townhouse is being excavated west of the theater. Its construction history dates back to the 1st century AD: it was probably built after the devastating earthquake of 66 AD. This dating links a specific phase of construction to a major event without resolving the uncertainty in the historical record.

The townhouse remained in use as a residence until it was destroyed in the great earthquake of 365 AD, and it was altered several times. Some of these changes are visible in places in the masonry. The archaeological evidence therefore tells not only of the house’s construction, but also of its long period of residential use and the adaptations made over time. For anyone interested in ancient ways of life, the history of this house complements the view of public buildings with a concrete example of domestic life.

Water supply and trade

The cisterns in the archaeological area supplied the Roman baths. Together with household cisterns, they helped meet the city’s increased water needs in Roman times. This points to the role of water supply in urban life: public baths and private household cisterns were part of a shared system in which different facilities contributed to the city’s needs.

Trade was another aspect of ancient Aptera. Its citizens were predominantly merchants and shipowners, and much of the trade at the time was conducted by sea. Water supply and trade thus shed light on different topics: infrastructure in everyday life on the one hand, and the city’s economic focus on the other. Together, these details give ancient history more depth than a mere sequence of buildings and periods.

Traces of later periods and the landscape

The preserved main building of the monastery stands at the center of the archaeological area. It was built during the Venetian period, in the second half of the 16th century or the early 17th century; the smaller outbuildings date from even later. Buildings from the Venetian era thus complement the ancient remains around Aptera. The place name also preserves its own history: Aptera was formerly called “Megala Chorafia,” meaning “large fields.” This earlier name may still appear on some street signs.

Aptera’s elevated location on the southern side of Souda Bay, with views across the bay and the Apokoronas plain, gives it a clear connection to the landscape. Along with the scattered settlement and the church at its center, this creates a different picture from that of the ancient city’s history. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider which aspect matters more for your stay: the landscape and its expansive views, or the historical sites in the nearby archaeological area. Aptera combines both, without reducing the landscape to the coastline alone.
