Sevastí brings together a tree-lined park at its highest point, the town’s religious history, archaeological traces and an annual tradition. From Λόφος της Σεβαστής, sweeping views extend across the coast of Pieria and Mount Olympus; churches and chapels each have their own dedications, and a burial mound with three tombs dating to the 4th century BC was located on the border with Korinós. When choosing a holiday destination, this offers landscape, history and cultural experiences as distinct interests to consider.

A tree-lined park with sweeping views

At Sevastí’s highest point lies Λόφος της Σεβαστής, a tree-lined park with sweeping views of the coast of Pieria and Mount Olympus. The view brings the coast and Mount Olympus together in a striking landscape. If you also choose your holiday destination for its scenery, this hill offers a specific point of reference in Sevastí. Its panoramic outlook sets it apart from the cultural and archaeological themes that also shape the place.

Churches and the history of the place

Sevastí’s main Orthodox church is dedicated to Άγιος Νικόλαος. The chapel of Άγιος Γεώργιος is set amid greenery; the chapel dedicated to Αγία Τριάς is one of the place’s two chapels. The main church, the two chapels and their respective dedications give a tangible account of the place’s religious history; the green surroundings of the chapel of Saint George provide a distinct landscape accent. Sevastí’s Greek Evangelical Church also celebrated its 100th anniversary on 3 August 2024. Pontian refugees founded Sevastí in 1928. The settlement’s founding and a later church anniversary thus represent two distinct historical points in time.

Archaeology on the border with Korinós

On the border between Sevastí and Korinós, at the Τούμπα Παππά archaeological site, there was a low burial mound covering three richly furnished tombs dating to the 4th century BC. This date is far earlier than Sevastí’s founding in 1928; the border location also gives the site a clear geographical connection to Korinós. The ancient tombs thus add a much earlier layer of history to the place.

An annual tradition

The Καλοκαιρινό Συναπάντημα adds a different cultural dimension. It is an annual tradition in Sevastí and the wider Pieria region; each year, many visitors come for traditional music, dancing and an evening of festivities. Unlike the historical dates, it is a recurring cultural event centred on music and dance. If you would like the festival to influence your travel dates, check the event dates in advance.

When choosing a place to stay, it is worth considering which aspect of your trip matters most: the views of the coast and Mount Olympus, the religious and archaeological history, or the annual festival. If Sevastí suits your plans, you can tailor your search for a holiday apartment to the kind of trip you have in mind.
