In Nea Potidea, the canal that runs through the village, the history of the ancient city of Potidea and the coast come together in a compact area. You can walk along the water, discover ancient traces or spend time at different stretches of beach. There are also two coastal parks, with greenery on both sides of the isthmus. This combination makes the town an interesting choice if you would like to include both cultural experiences and time by the sea in your vacation.

The Canal and the History of the Isthmus

The Nea Potidea Canal is 1,250 metres long and 40 metres wide. It was built to make shipping easier and protect the ancient city of Cassandreia. The Macedonian king had Cassandreia built on the site of ancient Potidea. The canal’s dimensions give a clear sense of its scale; its origins link the practical importance of a waterway with the history of the city.

Because of its strategic location on the Kassandra isthmus, ancient Potidea was one of the region’s most important port cities. In Nea Potidea, you can walk along the canal through the village and see the ancient city’s fortification wall right beside it. This means the waterway and the city’s history are not just separate themes: the wall stands directly beside the canal, while the walk takes you through the village.

Beaches South of and Near the Town

The main stretch of Nea Potidea’s eastern beach lies south of the canal. There are beach bars and a water park. As tourist facilities like these may change, check what is available during your stay before travelling. The eastern beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag; if this award is important to your plans, check its current status.

Nearby Portes Beach offers a different coastal experience. The beach has golden sand and clear turquoise water, and trees provide natural shade. Swimming and sunbathing are among the activities available there. This gives you some specific beach features to help you choose: the main stretch of the eastern beach with the amenities mentioned above, or Portes Beach with its sand, water and shade from the trees.

A Nearby Macedonian Tomb

The Macedonian Tomb of Potidaea is located near Nea Potidea. It was discovered in 1961 and dates to approximately the 4th century BC. The tomb represents one of the last phases of the Macedonian dynasty. Finds there include pottery, jewellery and weapons. These objects provide specific examples that help put the site in historical context; a visit may also appeal to anyone interested in archaeological traces.

Green Walks and Choosing Your Accommodation

Nea Potidea has two large coastal parks, one on each side of the isthmus. You can walk among the greenery there. The parks complement a walk along the canal and time at the beach, offering another way to explore the town on foot without requiring you to plan a particular type of outing.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it can help to first decide which experiences you want your trip to focus on: the canal and the town’s history, a day at the beach or walks in green surroundings. Then compare the locations of the accommodation options you are considering with the places you want to visit. This lets you base your choice on your interests rather than deciding solely on a general impression of the holiday destination.
