Ouranoupoli brings together stretches of beach on the north side, a tower with a history dating back to the 20th century, and traces of Zygos Monastery. A forest path on the Byzantine Walk also leads to a distinctive architectural site. When choosing your holiday apartment, it helps to consider in advance whether beach days, cultural history or walks will play the biggest role in your holiday.

Beaches on the North Side

The beaches of Ouranoupoli stretch along the north side. Some sections have umbrellas and sun loungers, as well as facilities offering services; this may vary by season. If beach time is your priority, you can make the north side a focus of your holiday plans. If you would like to combine different experiences, consider how much space you want beach days to take up alongside culture and walks.

Prosforio Tower: Museum and Harbour

Since 2005, Prosforio Tower has served as a museum. Exhibits include finds from the surrounding area and the history of the building itself, including antiquities from pre-Christian and Christian Chalkidiki. A dedicated section is devoted to Sydney and Joice Loch: both lived in the tower in the 20th century and worked to support Ouranoupoli’s residents who had fled Asia Minor. The museum’s themes thus bring together local finds, the history of the building and the social work of the two residents.

The small harbour by Prosforio Tower has a special function: boats depart from there carrying male pilgrims to the port of Dafni on Athos. Travel requires a Diamonitirio, a special permit available from the pilgrims’ office. This is restricted transport for pilgrims, not a general tourist boat service. If this trip is relevant to your plans, take both the intended passengers and the permit requirement into account.

Zygos and the Byzantine Walk

In the 11th century, Zygos was one of the most important monasteries on Athos. The monastery was later abandoned, probably as a result of pirate raids. According to the municipality, the archaeological site of Zygos Monastery lies at the natural transition to the monastic community of Athos and can be reached on foot from Ouranoupoli. The monastery’s historical significance and its location at this transition give the site a different focus from the museum exhibits at Prosforio Tower.

A forest path on the Byzantine Walk in Ouranoupoli leads to a water collection point with a low, 35-metre-long masonry gallery. Here, the focus is on a specific architectural feature, whereas Zygos is about monastic history and an archaeological site. The two destinations therefore offer different reasons to go for a walk, without needing to be considered part of the same route. If you plan to take the forest path, you can check the current trail conditions before setting out.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh up these interests: will your trip mainly revolve around beach days, or would you like to include more culture and walks? This choice gives your search for accommodation in Ouranoupoli a clear direction without requiring you to commit to just one kind of holiday day.
