Istiaia’s culture encompasses a wide range of subjects: a post-Byzantine church with frescoes, collections on natural and everyday history, a stone tower house and a sculpture with a specific commemorative purpose. If you are considering staying in the town, you can distinguish between sacred architecture, regional collections and art history.

Agios Nikolaos Church and its frescoes

Agios Nikolaos Church is a three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica dating from the post-Byzantine period. It preserves parts of its frescoes from the 14th to 15th centuries. This brings together two different perspectives on a single building: its three-aisled form draws attention to the architecture, while the surviving wall paintings provide an art-historical point of reference. Visitors interested in historic churches will find concrete points of reference here for considering the architecture and pictorial art together.

Decorative arts are also among the town’s cultural themes. An interview from October 2021 reports on an exhibition of traditional jewellery created by Istiaia silversmith and goldsmith Theofanis Ramiotis, who ran a business in the city centre with his wife. The focus is therefore not only on buildings and collections, but also on handcrafted jewellery.

Natural history and everyday life

The Istiaia Natural History Museum displays exhibits on the region’s natural history and numerous taxidermied animals of various species. The Folklore Museum has a different focus. Its collections include everyday objects, urban women’s and men’s costumes from Istiaia, medicines and medical instruments from the past, documents and court rulings, as well as photographs. They also include handicrafts made by prisoners during the dictatorship.

The two collections thus represent different approaches: the Natural History Museum focuses on the region’s natural history, while the Folklore Museum’s collections cover everyday life, clothing, medicine, law and personal mementos. This variety of themes can help you decide which cultural interests to prioritise during your stay. If you plan to visit the collections, check visiting arrangements in advance.

The tower house and remembrance in art

The stone tower house of the Filaretos family stands on the northeastern edge of Istiaia, on the road to Neochori. Its design combines a fortified appearance and the defensive principles of the pre-industrial era with the needs of an urban residence. This juxtaposition is what makes the building particularly interesting: it represents both defensive thinking and the requirements of living in an urban setting.

A different way of engaging with history is seen in Christina Sarantopoulou’s stainless-steel sculpture “Άνθρωπος και Φύση” (“Man and Nature”). Created in 2022, the work measures 314 × 322 × 100 cm and was unveiled in Istiaia’s square. It commemorates the people who fought the forest fire in North Evia in 2021. The occasion matters alongside the material and precise dimensions: the sculpture links the commemoration of an event in North Evia with its unveiling in Istiaia.
