Kryonéri lies at the northern exit of the Athens Basin, where it meets Northeast Attica. The town’s history reaches from an ancient territorial affiliation to the founding of the modern settlement and memories of customs from Asia Minor. If you would like to include cultural history in your trip, you will encounter different layers of time here: an early connection to Dekeleia, a settlement history following the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and later cultural ties.

Between ancient affiliation and modern founding

In antiquity, Kryonéri belonged to the territory of the deme of Oion in the ancient city of Dekeleia. This historical affiliation offers an earlier perspective on the place than later accounts of the founding of the modern settlement. The distinction is important for getting your bearings: Dekeleia belongs to the ancient layer of the town’s history, while Bafi is associated with Kryonéri’s new beginning in the 20th century. Dekeleia can therefore be understood as a distinct historical point of reference, without conflating the ancient territorial allocation with the modern settlement history.

The history of modern Kryonéri began in 1923, after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. People displaced from Ionia were selected by lottery to receive houses in the newly founded settlement of “Μπάφι”. The lottery system links the experience of displacement with the question of how housing was allocated in a newly emerging settlement. Flight from Ionia was followed by the building of a new home. Bafi is the name of the settlement where this story began; in this way, Kryonéri’s modern history can be understood as more than just a founding year.

Keepsakes and cultural connections

The “Προσφυγικό Σπίτι στο Μπάφι” is located in Kryonéri’s cultural centre. It recreates a refugee home and displays collected items that refugees had brought with them from Asia Minor. The house and the objects offer different perspectives on the story: the house focuses on the form of housing, while the objects refer to the things people took with them when they fled. This cultural theme thus adds a material dimension of remembrance to the account of the settlement’s founding. For travellers interested in everyday history, this shift from a historical event to concrete objects offers an approach of its own.

Another cultural trace is the Asia Minor custom of Ai Giannis Klidonas. In 2022, the Cultural Association of the Women of Kryonéri revived it at the intersection of Agios Panteleimonos and Filellinon; the event began on 24 June at 9 pm. Unlike the story of houses and belongings brought along, this custom is at the centre of attention, revived at a specific location. This example adds a dated cultural event to the history of the settlement’s founding.

Local history as a guide for your stay

The church of Agios Panteleimon is also located in Kryonéri, adding a religious connection to the town’s history. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these perspectives you would like to shape your stay most: ancient territorial history, the modern founding, the memory of belongings brought along, or cultural and religious connections. They differ both in time period and in how they make history tangible. This can help you define your expectations of Kryonéri more clearly, rather than viewing every historical aspect as a single story.
