Agia Paraskevi offers two distinct ways to spend your time here: Mount Hymettus is all about hiking trails and the mountain landscape, while the Alekos Kontopoulos Museum takes you into the former home and studio of a painter. This lets you balance days of exercise and art in different ways, rather than shaping your trip around just one kind of experience. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering which of these aspects you want to define your stay, and how you would like to fit individual activities into your daily plans.

Hiking Trails and Getting Your Bearings on Mount Hymettus

Four hiking trails on Mount Hymettus are numbered 11 to 14 and cover a total of 20 kilometres. One of them starts at Gravias Park. The numbers distinguish the four trails; the 20 kilometres is their combined length, not the length of an individual route. This gives hikers two different points of reference for planning their day: a specific starting point and a total distance for the set of four trails.

The plans for the renovation of the park on Odos Gravias, described in 2017, included installing a bilingual map of northern Mount Hymettus and putting up a sign with visitor information. The map showed all the trails in the area and brought together information on the mountain’s history, fauna, flora, caves and other features. The park is in Zone B of Mount Hymettus. The park’s design at the time thus combined an overview of the trails with the mountain’s natural and cultural heritage.

Art in a Former Home and Studio

The Alekos Kontopoulos Museum offers a different focus. It is housed in the former home and studio where the painter and intellectual Alekos Kontopoulos lived, found inspiration and painted from 1964 to 1975. A visit to the museum is therefore tied to a specific place and a clearly defined period of his life. On display are paintings and drawings, as well as personal belongings, rare archival photographs and the painter’s extensive library. The collection offers several ways in: through his artistic work, personal objects and books from his intellectual world.

The museum offers informative guided tours for individuals and groups, as well as special tours for scientific institutions. If you would like to include a guided tour in your cultural itinerary, you can tailor this focus to the make-up of your travel group.

Choosing the Focus of Your Stay

Hiking and the museum offer different kinds of experiences: on the trails, the focus is on choosing a route; at the museum, it is on the connection between art, biography and collection. If you mainly want to spend time outdoors, include Gravias Park as a named starting point in your plans. For an art-focused stay, the former studio and the works on display provide the thematic framework. You can give each focus as much weight as you like, according to your interests.

Tailor your holiday apartment search to the activities you want to define your stay. For hiking plans, the starting point at Gravias Park is a specific point of reference; for a museum visit, the collection and guided tours take centre stage. This way, you can choose your base according to your preferred mix of hiking and art, rather than deciding solely by place name.
