Nature and landscape

Balloch Castle Country Park covers 200 acres of semi-natural and ornamental woodland, open parkland, formal gardens, meadows, play areas and waterfront areas. The approximately 19-hectare wetland of The Saltings, bounded by the River Clyde and the Forth and Clyde Canal, is home to wild orchids, butterflies, dragonflies and wetland birds. The Saltings Local Nature Reserve also has a wheelchair-accessible network of paths and information boards about local history and wildlife.

The Kilpatrick Hills offer opportunities for walking, cycling and picnicking by the loch. From there, there are views over West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow and the River Clyde; red deer, otters and ospreys can be found in the hills.

Waterways and activities

For cyclists, National Cycle Route 7 passes through Balloch. The 17-mile West Loch Lomond Cycle Path follows the western shore of Loch Lomond from Balloch. Boat trips on Loch Lomond depart from the River Leven by the bridge opposite Balloch railway station. The walk from Balloch railway station to Loch Lomond Shores takes about 15 minutes.

Balloch Castle Country Park also offers active pursuits: six permanent orienteering courses run through the park. The Loch Lomond Highland Games take place there every year in July. The Maid of the Loch at Balloch Pier comprises a historic ship, a museum cabin and a steam slide. By prior arrangement, it can offer one-hour guided hard-hat tours of the ship on weekdays; during these tours, visitors can steer the ship from the wheelhouse.

Culture and history

The Heritage Trails in West Dunbartonshire explain historical and contemporary architecture, industry, famous people and the natural landscape along their routes. Dumbarton Castle is one of Britain's oldest fortified sites and has a history stretching back 1,500 years. The castle's Georgian fortifications and buildings are among the most significant surviving sites of their kind in Britain. Dumbarton Castle stands on volcanic rock and overlooks the Clyde Estuary.

At Dumbarton Castle's Governor's House, the Rock of Ages exhibition displays historical artefacts discovered in the castle, including part of a 1,000-year-old Viking sword. In Clydebank, Clydebank Museum and Local History & Archives opened as an independent museum in July 2025; it presents Clydebank's past and future. The museum displays examples from the Singer sewing machine collection, which has been recognised as a collection of national significance. The Sewing Machine Collection & Singer Archive is the largest publicly accessible collection of its kind in Europe.

Clydebank Town Hall and Galleries displays a permanent exhibition of large ship models at the entrance. In Clydebank, Auchentoshan Distillery also offers behind-the-scenes tours.

SEA LIFE Loch Lomond is home to more than 1,500 animals across seven themed zones, including an interactive rock pool experience. In the Tropical Ocean Tunnel, visitors can see blacktip sharks and rays.
