Charmouth combines coastal scenery, geological history and a variety of trails in a unique way. The village is part of the Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site. Anyone planning a trip with nature experiences, beaches and cultural-historical discoveries will find a range of ways to spend their days here and choose suitable accommodation according to their own interests.

Nature and trails around Charmouth

The Golden Cap Estate can be reached on foot from Charmouth. Most of the estate is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A network of 25 miles of footpaths around the Golden Cap Estate begins at Stonebarrow Hill. This makes it possible to explore the landscape not only along the coast but also on longer routes through the surrounding area.

The rock layers of the cliffs at Charmouth formed around 195 million years ago during the Early Jurassic period on the bed of a calm sea. They consist mainly of mud, clay and limestone. The coast and cliffs around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are also home to a great variety of plants and animals. This geological and natural character makes the area particularly interesting for anyone who likes to combine their holiday days with tangible discoveries.

Beach, fossils and trails by the water

Fossils can be found loose along the coast and cliffs around Charmouth and Lyme Regis: they are washed out of the cliffs and lie on the beach among pebbles and rubble. A two-hour Seashore Safari takes place at East Beach in Charmouth. Those who plan to make the beach not only a destination but also an experience can connect geological history directly with a stay by the sea here.

The beach walk from Charmouth to Lyme Regis is only possible at low tide. This time window is crucial when planning your day. Another option is an approximately 1.5-mile footpath from the centre of Charmouth to Wootton Fitzpaine. It follows a tributary of the River Char and crosses meadows. Another footpath follows the River Char to Whitchurch Canonicorum, which is about two miles away. This gives you the choice between a day on the coast and walks through the countryside.

Local history and getting there

The village itself also offers historical points of interest. The Charmouth House Hotel was formerly an inn and, for a time, a private house. It dates from around the 17th century and was remodelled in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Manor House consists of three interconnected cottages, has a 16th-century core and was refronted in the 18th and 19th centuries. The parish church of St Andrew was completely rebuilt in 1836–38 by Charles Fowler in the Gothic Revival style.

For travel by train, Axminster Station is the nearest railway station; it is six miles from Charmouth. The nearest bus stop is a ten-minute walk away at St Andrew’s Church in Charmouth. The X51 and X53 Jurassic Coaster services operate from there. This information can help you take your preferred mode of arrival and planned excursions into account when searching for a holiday apartment or holiday house.

The right base for planning your trip

When choosing accommodation in Charmouth, the most important factor is the mix of experiences you want from your trip. If nature, fossils and longer walks are the main focus, you should plan your days around Golden Cap, Stonebarrow Hill and the coast. For a trip with a stronger interest in local history, the historic buildings and St Andrew can be included in your exploration. Those arriving without their own car can also take the location of the railway and bus stops into account when searching. This means that the holiday apartment or holiday house remains the starting point for exactly the experiences you want to have in Charmouth.
