Weybridge: Motorsport, History and Heathland
Accommodation in Weybridge
Weybridge combines British motorsport history, aviation, historic buildings and varied landscapes. For planning your trip, this means you can combine impressive technology experiences with culture and nature and choose the focus of your days when looking for a holiday apartment.
Motorsport and aviation as special experiences
Brooklands was the world's first race track and is considered the birthplace of British motorsport and British aviation. The Brooklands Concorde Experience brings this history particularly vividly to life. The 35-minute tour provides a look inside Concorde. For the daily Concorde Experience, you need both an admission ticket for the museum and an additional ticket for the Concorde Experience.
Active driving experiences are also part of Brooklands' profile. Options include drives in classic cars on the historic Brooklands race track or through the Surrey countryside. Mercedes-Benz World complements this selection with driving experiences in AMG vehicles as well as options for young drivers, 4x4s and electric vehicles. Depending on your interests, you can therefore choose between motorsport history, classic automotive culture and modern vehicle technology.
Historical traces around Weybridge
Town Lock recalls the history of Oatlands Palace: the structure was originally built with bricks from the palace after it was demolished in the 17th century. Oatlands Palace itself was built mainly between 1537 and 1545 for Henry VIII. Today, the site is preserved through underground foundations, associated archaeological remains and restored ruins and is designated as a Scheduled Monument.
The registered Oatlands site includes 2 hectares of formal and pleasure gardens, 10 hectares of parkland to the south, and the adjacent artificial Broad Water, which also covers 10 hectares. These clearly different elements make the area interesting for visitors who want to experience historic sites not only as buildings but also in terms of their landscape design.
In the centre of Weybridge stands St James' Church, a striking building dating from 1848 and one of the architect John Loughborough Pearson's earliest works. St George's Hill is also home to a large multivallate hillfort that is comparatively well preserved; large parts of its interior remain largely undisturbed.
Heathland, woodland and paths for varied days
The eastern part of Weybridge Heath south of the railway line near Cobbetts Hill features typical heathland with heather, ferns and gorse. Brooklands Wood offers a different landscape impression: the 12-hectare woodland is open for public use. This allows you to choose between heathland character and woodland scenery if you want to include time outdoors alongside your cultural destinations.
There is a footpath and cycle path from Weybridge railway station to Brooklands. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether motorsport and technology, historic places or landscape experiences should be the focus of your trip. For families with different interests, this selection makes it possible to combine eventful and quieter days without reducing the destination to just one theme.
