Hawkinge combines impressive aviation history with church architecture and a landscape on the North Downs ridge, offering views across the English Channel. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Hawkinge will find a place offering a wide range of discoveries: the Kent Battle of Britain Museum tells the story of an important frontline airfield during the Battle of Britain, while the Church of St. Michael and the archaeological remains near Hawkinge provide further historical perspectives.

Aviation History at the Kent Battle of Britain Museum

The Kent Battle of Britain Museum is located at Hawkinge Airfield, which was an important frontline fighter airfield during the Battle of Britain. The first air raid on Hawkinge took place on 12 August 1940; 15 Ju 88s attacked the airfield. All air operations at Hawkinge were directed from the Operations Block during the war. The building itself was constructed in 1927. The original Armoury is also part of the site's history and was built in 1926.

The museum contains several unusual replicas. The Stuart-Buttle Hangar houses scale-model Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft built for the 1968 film “The Battle of Britain”; large parts of the film were shot in Hawkinge. The Lord Dowding Memorial Hangar displays three scale-model replicas of Messerschmitt Bf 109E aircraft from the same film. The museum also features three scale-model Hawker Hurricanes representing three aircraft flown by No. 32 Squadron.

The collection includes a comprehensive Armoury with ground-based and airborne weapons. One of three Pickett Hamilton Retractable Forts also stands in the car park. Building 4 is the original “B” Flight Dispersal Hut, built in 1940, which formerly stood on the eastern side of Hawkinge Airfield near Killing Wood. Hawkinge Airfield was also used in 1944 for Operation Diver against V1 flying bombs. These different features make the museum particularly interesting for travellers who want to combine technical details, buildings and the history of the airfield.

Church and Archaeological Remains

The Church of St. Michael dates from the late 11th or 12th century. Structural elements from the 13th and 17th centuries, together with a restoration in 1875, shape its documented architectural history. The nave contains four roof trusses with crown posts. In this way, the church adds a significantly older historical layer to the museum's focus.

The archaeological site near Hawkinge also offers a glimpse far back beyond the era of the airfield. An investigation identified at least nine roughly rectangular enclosures defined by boundary ditches. The earliest settlement identified there appears to date from the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age, approximately between 900 and 600 BC. Together with its location on the North Downs ridge and views across the English Channel, this creates a destination where cultural history and the landscape can be planned as distinct experiences.
