Buriton combines a varied landscape with an impressive local history. The South Downs provide the scenic backdrop, while paths through fields, hidden valleys and woods, as well as across the Downs, offer different ways to explore the village and surrounding area.

Three Landscapes and a Nature Reserve

The parish of Buriton extends across three significant landscape types: the large chalk escarpment, the Greensand terrace and the wooded estate downland. This sequence illustrates the character of the place while also providing different starting points for day plans. Coulters Dean Nature Reserve combines a small woodland with chalk grassland. It provides a refuge for rare butterflies and plants and can be reached from Buriton Pond via a footpath through the meadows behind the church. The path follows the old cart track known as the Milky Way and then climbs onto the South Downs.

Walking Trails with Different Focal Points

The Shipwrights Way enters the village of Buriton along Bolinge Hill Lane and Petersfield Road. The Hangers Way reaches Buriton through small fields and shallow, hidden valleys. Those who want to compare different landscapes when planning their trip will find two clearly named approaches to the village here.

The “Buriton through woods and fields” route starts and finishes at the public car park at Halls Hill. Its described landscapes include hillside woods as well as views across the village and eastwards along the Downs. The “Buriton following the Shipwrights Way” walk also starts at Halls Hill car park. If you are planning a stay in which you want to try different trails on different days, it is worth considering the respective starting points when choosing your accommodation.

The Buriton Literary Walk starts at Buriton Pond, opposite St Mary's Church. Its main route is 2.5 miles long; a public car park is located at the junction at the lower end of Kiln Lane. Petersfield railway station is 2 miles from the starting point of the Buriton Literary Walk.

Churches, Manor Houses and Local History

The Church of St Mary has a 12th-century nave, as well as a 13th-century chancel and vestry. The churchyard of St Mary's Church contains the unmarked grave of the 17th-century botanist John Goodyer. Visitors interested in church art, local history and notable figures from the past will find several distinct themes here.

The “Walks Through Time” series comprises six guided walks through the parish of Buriton, with historical information. In addition, Buriton hosts the local history exhibition “Bygone Buriton” every year, usually in September. The lime works along Kiln Lane recall another chapter in the village’s history: significant activity continued there for more than 70 years, until the Second World War. Chalk was quarried and burned at the works before being sent to factories to produce “Pug” mortar and cement.

The buildings also contribute to the area’s historic character. The Manor House in Buriton is a Grade II* listed building. The Old Rectory is probably the medieval manor house and former vicarage and is now used as a residence.

Buriton as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

Buriton particularly appeals to travellers who do not want to view nature and culture separately. You can plan one day around a route through woods and fields, link another with the Literary Walk or the historical walks, and keep the three landscape types in mind. For families with different interests, this thematic mix provides a practical basis for setting the pace of the stay themselves: longer landscape experiences can alternate with shorter cultural and historical highlights, without having to fit every attraction into a single day plan.

For further orientation, you can also explore Barton on Sea, Lower Froyle, Whitsbury, Petersfield, Hythe, Aldershot, Bordon and Farnborough.
