Inverclyde combines a historic water engineering heritage, coastal landscapes and museums with distinctive experiences. Between the Greenock Cut, listed buildings, art archives and the coast, the region presents a diverse picture in which nature and culture exist side by side.

Nature

The Greenock Cut lies in Inverclyde’s historic water catchment area and is a 12-kilometre, signposted circular walking route. The area around the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre offers opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife watching. Free walking guides and maps are available from leaflet stands in public buildings and visitor attractions throughout Inverclyde.

Lunderston Bay is a sandy beach with coastal views and walking paths. Sustrans cycle route 75 between Gourock and Inverkip passes through Lunderston Bay. Rangers from Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park offer activities there for exploring rock pools and carrying out beach clean-ups.

Finlaystone Country Estate combines 500 acres of ancient woodland with mature gardens. The estate’s woodland is home to deer, foxes, grey squirrels, stoats, three species of bird of prey and a large heronry.

Culture

Newark Castle survives as a 15th-century tower house and gatehouse; both are connected around a central courtyard by later 16th-century building ranges. On the outside, Newark Castle features notable Jacobean details and offers views across the Clyde.

The Wemyss Bay railway station is a Category A listed building and was rebuilt in 1903 to designs by James Miller and Donald Mathieson. A footpath connects the station with the ferry terminal.

The Watt Institution in Greenock brings together the McLean Museum and Art Gallery, the Watt Library, the Inverclyde Archives and Watt Hall in a Category A listed building. The McLean Museum and Art Gallery displays collections from many cultures and from 3,000 years of human history. The Greenock Inspires Church Trail complements this with a self-guided heritage walk to churches in the centre of Greenock.

The James Watt Heritage Trail uses augmented reality to convey the history and achievements of James Watt. The Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow consists of 10-metre-high stainless-steel figures in Coronation Park.

The Wyllieum houses the artwork and archive of Gourock artist George Wyllie. Gallery One at the Wyllieum presents year-round exhibitions of contemporary art by international and award-winning artists. The Wyllieum is located at Ocean Terminal in Greenock.

The Greenock Burns Club exhibition and archive at the Custom House display artefacts and books collected over many years. Group visits to the exhibition and archive can be arranged by appointment.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Heritage Museum displays historic fire engines and equipment. It is located in the former fire station on Dalrymple Street, within Greenock’s Municipal Buildings.

Experiences

Gourock Outdoor Pool combines swimming in heated salt water with views across the Clyde estuary. The local distillery culture can also be explored through specific offerings: Ardgowan Distillery offers 90-minute tours ending with a guided tasting of three Clydebuilt whisky expressions. Blackwoods Distillery offers tours and tastings, cocktail masterclasses and a school where visitors can distil their own gin.

Beltrees Forge offers bookable blacksmithing experiences in a working forge. Alongside walking paths, the coast, museums and exhibitions, these craft activities add another dimension to the diverse impressions of Inverclyde.

Inverclyde has 13 railway stations, with services from Glasgow Central or Paisley Gilmour Street via Port Glasgow to Wemyss Bay and the ferry terminal for Rothesay, as well as via Greenock to Gourock.
