Fife can be explored along long-distance trails, in protected natural areas and at historic sites. The Fife Coastal Path is a long-distance walking route approximately 117 miles or 188 kilometres long. It begins in Kincardine in West Fife and ends in Newburgh in North Fife. Trails and nature

Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve lies at the mouth of the Tay Estuary in the east of Fife. It can be accessed via Morton Lochs, Tayport or Kinshaldy. There is a bus stop at the Tayport entrance; Leuchars is the nearest railway station. Isle of May National Nature Reserve offers cliff-top paths from which breeding seabirds and puffins can be observed. In autumn, during the breeding season, it is home to the largest colony of breeding Atlantic grey seals in eastern Great Britain. The reserve also offers opportunities for walking, wildlife watching and exploring its human history.

The Fife Pilgrim Way is a 64-mile route that follows the path of medieval pilgrims from the River Forth to the shrine of St Andrew. Several sections are accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs. Pilgrims have travelled through Fife to St Andrews along this route since at least the 11th century.

Culture and history

Culross is Scotland’s most complete example of a burgh from the 17th and 18th centuries. Culross Palace is an exceptional example of an early 17th-century merchant’s house built for Sir George Bruce. At the Palace, visitors can explore small rooms, connecting passageways and painted ceilings.

At Falkland Palace, visitors can explore reconstructed royal apartments associated with Mary, Queen of Scots. It also features a physic garden with Renaissance herbs, laid out in the foundations of the former Great Hall.

The Forth Bridges Trail is a five-mile circular route with 24 points of interest, historical information and panoramic views of the bridges. It is accessible on foot, by bicycle and by public transport, including via North Queensferry and Dalmeny railway stations.

Cycling

Fife Cycle Park is Scotland’s first purpose-built cycle racing circuit and has a 1.6-kilometre outdoor tarmac track. Adaptive bikes and cycling courses are offered there for children, young people and adults.

Eden Mill Distillery is also accessible by public transport: it is served by Stagecoach bus route 99 between St Andrews and Dundee. Leuchars railway station is a 25-minute walk away.
