History and cultural traces

Kilbirnie is designated as a Conservation Area. The name of the place derives from Cill Bhraonaigh or cille Brendan. In the 6th century, Saint Brendan founded a Christian site in Kilbirnie. Notable historical connections include Kilbirnie Castle or Place, a rectangular tower house dating from the late 15th century that was destroyed by fire in 1757. Kilbirnie Auld Kirk and Cemetery Walls also have a complex building history extending from 1470 into the 20th century.

The development of the town was initially shaped by flax processing and weaving, before the iron and steel industries took a leading role in the 19th and early 20th centuries. W & J Knox was founded in Kilbirnie as a textile mill, processing locally grown flax into fibres and producing linen yarn. Radio City Cinema, designed by James Houston from Kilbirnie, provides another cultural connection. The GV Step Forward Heritage Trail passes the former Kilbirnie railway station as waypoint 8; the station's former status is explicitly part of the trail's history.
