Holiday apartment in Angus: coast, culture and nature

Arbroath Abbey was founded by William I in 1178. In April 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath was sent from Arbroath Abbey. House of Dun is a Georgian country house whose history is brought to life through guided tours with costumed interpreters. The courtyard buildings of House of Dun house the Angus Folk Collection. J M Barrie’s Birthplace is a traditional weaver’s cottage.

Culture

The history of aviation is also present in Angus. The Montrose Air Station Museum is located on the site of Britain’s first operational military airfield, established by the Royal Flying Corps in February 1913. The museum displays a scale replica of a B.E.2a aircraft and a replica of a Sopwith Camel F.1. Visitors can also try on uniforms and touch numerous exhibits.

Edzell Castle combines garden art with detailed design. The castle includes a walled garden surrounded by an elaborately decorated architectural frame from the early 17th century. The walls of the Pleasance feature 21 carvings depicting planetary deities, the Liberal Arts and the Cardinal Virtues. Edzell Castle and Gardens also includes a summerhouse within the walled garden.

Glamis Castle has been the ancestral seat of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne for over 650 years and offers guided tours. In Glamis, The Bothy Experience offers hosted gin tastings. Golf has been played in Carnoustie since at least 1560. Glenesk Folk Museum was originally founded in 1955 by local teacher Greta Michie.

Historic landscape features include Brown Caterthun and White Caterthun. Brown Caterthun is fortified by four earth ramparts and ditches. White Caterthun has a massive stone wall, a ditch and outer ramparts.

Nature

Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve is an internationally important upland area at the upper end of Glen Clova. The Corrie Fee Trail leads to the edge of Glen Doll Forest. At Monikie Country Park, Denfind Bird Sanctuary is suitable for observing a wide variety of wetland birds all year round. Monikie Country Park itself offers self-guided trails, and water sports equipment can be hired there.

The main path of the Rocks of Solitude runs above the river gorge. At the Rocks of Solitude, visitors can watch salmon leaping upstream.

Trails

The coastal path from Arbroath to Auchmithie follows dramatic sea cliffs and is suitable exclusively for walkers. The paths on the House of Dun estate include Lady Augusta’s Walk through the Den of Dun gorge. The Blue Door Walk is a riverside path in Edzell leading to a blue door.

Family

The Museum Trail for Children is a family-friendly activity exploring the history and stories of the towns and villages of Angus. At Glenesk Folk Museum, visitors can explore galleries, gardens and a small woodland path.
