Silverdale is a destination for travellers who want to combine nature experiences, coastal landscapes and historical traces. Limestone, woodland paths, reed beds and views across Morecambe Bay shape the choice of excursions. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday cottage, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus more on peaceful days in nature, active cycling routes or cultural and historical discoveries.

Landscapes of Woodland, Limestone and Bay

Trowbarrow Local Nature Reserve is designated as a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The area was formerly a limestone quarry and is now managed as a nature reserve for peaceful recreation. A Tramper route leads through the entire site. In Eaves Wood, paths run through ancient woodland and across clearings with limestone slabs; along the way, you will pass ancient yew trees. Another Tramper route from the car park provides access to parts of the woodland. The gate at the car park is wheelchair accessible.

Leighton Moss is a particular highlight of the area. The RSPB nature reserve is home to the largest reed bed in north-west England and provides a habitat for otters, bearded tits, bitterns, marsh harriers, herons and red deer. The paths there are level and well maintained. With the exception of the path to Lower Hide, they are fully accessible; all hides are wheelchair accessible. This makes it possible to plan a day in nature more closely around the interests and abilities of your group, without everyone having to choose the same route.

Coastal Views and Routes for Active Days

Jack Scout showcases Silverdale’s coastal side: the landscape consists of limestone grassland and low cliffs overlooking Morecambe Bay. Walking paths lead across the cliffs and through scrub and meadow landscapes; there are also secluded paths leading down to small coves. Silverdale itself offers sheltered walks along limestone paths and through woodland areas, leading to panoramic views across the bay towards the Lakeland Fells.

There is also specific guidance for getting there and for cycling trips. Silverdale railway station is 250 metres from the RSPB nature reserve at Leighton Moss. It is served by the railway line from Manchester Airport and from Preston to Barrow. Leighton Moss can also be reached by bus routes 49, 51 and 550; a bus stop is located directly at the visitor centre next to the main car park. For cycling tours, the area lies directly on National Cycle Route 6 and Regional Route 90, the Lancashire Cycleway. The Causeway is a public bridleway that can be used by bicycle. This information can help you take your preferred mix of train, bus, walking and cycling days into account when choosing your accommodation.

History and Distinctive Local Details

At the summit of Eaves Wood stands the Queen Victoria Jubilee monument, known as the Pepperpot, overlooking Silverdale. A chimney dating from around 1800 remains at Jenny Brown’s Point. It is made of dressed limestone blocks laid in courses and is believed to represent the remains of a copper smelting works that operated approximately from 1780 to 1820. Literary history is also part of the local character: Elizabeth Gaskell regularly holidayed in Silverdale and wrote some of her works at Lindeth Tower.

Another natural feature is Bottoms Wood, which is carpeted with white wild garlic flowers. Depending on your priorities, you can plan Silverdale as a base for quiet woodland walks, open coastal views, wildlife watching, cycling stages or historical discoveries. A holiday apartment in Silverdale is particularly worth considering if you want to explore the area’s different facets at your own daily pace.
