Langho is an interesting destination for anyone wishing to include culture, historic buildings, golf and countryside in their travel plans. St Mary’s Church in Langho was opened by the Bishop on 12 September 1959. Its modern Gothic Revival design was created by Desmond Williams; inside, large load-bearing pointed arches made of brickwork shape the space. The discovery of Langho therefore begins not with a long list, but with a distinctive building and a clear architectural feature.

Churches and historic houses

The area surrounding Langho also offers numerous points of interest for those interested in cultural history. St Leonard’s Church in Old Langho was completed in 1557. The church features high-quality stonework and unusual late-17th-century pew ends. Access is via the paved path through the churchyard. For visitors interested in church architecture and historic details, this makes it a destination in its own right.

Several farmhouses add to the character of the region. Potter Ford Farmhouse dates from 1610 and retains a chamfered fireplace bearing the inscription “EC 1610”, as well as a timber-framed wall with an original doorway. Rileys Farmhouse is an early- to mid-18th-century sandstone house with mullioned windows. Mytton Fold Farmhouse is a 1702 house with watertight-pointed sandstone masonry, mullioned windows and axial ceiling beams with an ovolo profile. Lower Woodcock Farmhouse, a Grade II listed building, lies south of Whalley Road in the centre of Langho.

Combining golf and countryside

Anyone planning active days alongside cultural visits will find that golf is a particular focus in Langho. Mytton Fold Golf Club in Langho has an 18-hole golf course. In addition, footgolf at Mytton Fold Golf Club combines golf and football in a game for all age groups. This gives travel groups with differing interests another way to make their stay varied, without every day having to follow the same pattern.

For walkers, the Ribble Valley Jubilee Trail is a 65-mile circular route divided into seven stages. The trail offers views across the Ribble Valley, over Langho, the neighbouring villages of Whalley and Billington and towards Clitheroe, as well as views of the River Ribble. Another route along the north-facing valley slopes above Langho also offers impressive views across the Ribble Valley, over Langho, Whalley and Billington and towards Clitheroe, as well as along the course of the River Ribble.

Langho railway station is also a distinctive landmark. It serves the three places of Old Langho, Langho and York. From the station, there are views into and across the Ribble Valley, particularly towards Pendle Hill. Langho can therefore be seen both through its architectural history and through the landscape that shapes the village and its surroundings.
