Culture and history

Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort is part of the Hadrian’s Wall element of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. Jarrow Hall also takes visitors back to an earlier era: the complex comprises an Anglo-Saxon farm, an Anglo-Saxon village and the Bede Museum. Jarrow Hall is located next to St Paul’s Church and Monastic Site, meaning that several historical points of reference are closely connected.

At South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, the permanent gallery “The Story of South Tyneside” traces the development of the region from Roman times to the present day. The Word, a cultural centre with experiences, activities and facilities for people of all ages, is also located in the heart of South Shields. The Word hosts an annual Write Festival. The Customs House offers live performances, cinema, visual arts and projects for adults, families, children and young people.

Coast and nature

The coast of South Tyneside is of international importance and includes the Durham Coast Special Area of Conservation as well as the Northumbrian Coast Special Protection Area and Ramsar site. The Leas forms a distinctive landscape area with two and a half miles of cliff grassland and wildflower meadows, as well as far-reaching views from the England Coast Path. Souter Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the United Kingdom designed to operate with electric light.

Leisure and water

North Marine Park in South Shields has been restored to its original Victorian character. The park includes a Roman- and maritime-themed children’s play area as well as a fitness trail for adults. The South Tyneside Festival is an annual series of summer events featuring free live music, family activities and entertainment, as well as a creative carnival parade.

There are also specific activities on the water: South Shields Surf School offers stand-up paddleboarding or surfing lessons as well as equipment hire. Haven Point Pool & Leisure Complex offers swimming and water sports lessons according to Swim England’s Learn to Swim Programme.
