North Somercotes combines impressive wildlife experiences with walking trails and historical discoveries. The Donna Nook National Nature Reserve is particularly significant: access is via Marsh Lane in North Somercotes. Within the reserve, dunes, dune valleys and tidal areas meet mudflats, salt meadows and salt marshes. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday cottage in North Somercotes will find a place from which different travel interests can be combined into a varied itinerary.

Wildlife experiences at Donna Nook National Nature Reserve

In winter, the Donna Nook National Nature Reserve is home to a colony of grey seals with more than 2,000 pups born each year. A dedicated viewing area helps reduce disturbance to the seals. For you, this means that wildlife watching can be planned as a clearly defined nature experience during your stay without unnecessarily disturbing the animals.

The North Somercotes 500 Acres Walk also combines landscape with orientation around the village. The route starts at the Village Hall on Keeling Street and leads to the Stonebridge car park. From there, there is access to the beach and the Donna Nook National Nature Reserve. This means the walk can be combined with another nature destination, although the individual sections should be regarded as separate elements of the day's itinerary.

Walking Trails with History

The North Somercotes Church Walk follows roadside paths, quiet roads and field paths. Along the way, you can visit the Church of St. Mary; to do so, walk approximately 100 m farther. The font in St Mary's Church dates from the 15th century. One panel of the font depicts Christ rising from the grave. These details give the walk a cultural focus that differs from the wildlife and landscape observation at Donna Nook.

The North Somercotes Village Walk passes a cemetery opened in 1880 with two chapels. The chapels are now listed as Grade II buildings. Those interested in architectural history and local development can therefore choose this route as a separate discovery instead of focusing their stay exclusively on the nature reserve.

Historical traces can also be found on the North Somercotes Mill Field Walk One. The route passes undulating fields that preserve the remains of former salt works established around Mare Haven. Mare Haven silted up around 1200. On the North Somercotes Mill Field Walk Two, it may be possible to catch a distant view of the rear of “Locksley Hall”. This is often associated with the Locksley Hall in Tennyson's poem. In the distance to the left, you can also see the Forest, which was planted in the Warren in the 1960s, shortly after the East Coast Floods of 1953.

Which accommodation suits your travel plans

North Somercotes is suitable as a location to search for accommodation if you do not want to consider nature, walking trails and culture separately. In winter, the grey seal colony is the main attraction. Other travel plans may focus on the trails around the Village Hall, the historic church and cemetery details, or the traces of the landscape around Mare Haven. If you would like to include fishing, Oasis Lakes is one of the fishing waters around North Somercotes; it offers good fishing opportunities for anglers.

Choosing a holiday apartment in North Somercotes can therefore be guided by the desired combination of wildlife observation, walking experiences and local history. When planning your trip, consider which of these themes should take up the most space and use the individual trails as different perspectives on the area.
