Gainsborough combines impressive history with riverside experiences and independent exploration throughout the town. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or accommodation for a varied stay can choose between historic sights, walks, art, local handicraft culture and events here.

History, Art and Special Buildings

An important point of interest is Gainsborough Old Hall, which was largely built in the late 15th century. One of the highlights is a medieval kitchen complex, which adds a particularly vivid detail to the historic site. From the tower, you have views over the town and the River Trent. This means the visit can be combined not only with architecture and history, but also with a view of the surrounding area.

Gainsborough All Saints presents another historical side of the town. The church is designed in the Georgian style and has a medieval tower. Inside is an altarpiece that is a copy of Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”. On the banks of the River Trent, there is also The Pilgrim Woman. The figure symbolises growth and new beginnings and depicts the woman preparing to travel aboard the Mayflower to America.

Walks with Different Character

For exercise by the water, the Riverside Walk offers an uninterrupted 1.7-mile walk along the riverbank. It leads from the historic Trent Bridge to the picturesque village of Morton. If, on the other hand, you would like to explore the town’s history at your own pace, you can choose the Gainsborough Heritage Trail. The walk is self-guided and takes 90 minutes. The trail is also flat and suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and people with reduced mobility.

This creates different options for planning your day: the Riverside Walk focuses on the riverbank and the longer route, while the Heritage Trail combines historical orientation with a clearly defined circuit. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether culture, a walk by the water or a combination of both is more important to you.

Local Life and Discoveries in the Town Centre

From February to December, the Farmers’ and Craft Market takes place on the second Saturday of each month. Fresh, local, homemade and handmade products are offered. This makes the market an opportunity to discover regional products and crafts.

The Gainsborough Heritage Centre houses an industrial exhibition on the ground floor featuring locally manufactured products and machinery. On the first floor, there is a themed 20th-century street with former shops, a post office and a backyard scene. The centre also offers a research service through its local history archive. For a cultural evening, the Trinity Arts Centre offers cinema and theatre, while live theatre and films are also available. Marshall’s Yard is an open-air shopping centre in the heart of Gainsborough town centre.
