Landscape

Ranis is situated on the southern edge of the Orla Depression, between the Thuringian Holzland and the upland area around the Hohenwarte Reservoir, at an elevation of approximately 380 metres.

The Schrötersbach stream rises south of Ranis and runs through the town area. Along the way, it also flows through the Stadtwiese and alongside sections of the former town wall.
