Nature Conservation on Two Scales

The Kernberge and Wöllmisse near Jena protected area covers 2,070 hectares, was designated on 12 October 2004, and extends, among other places, into Großlöbichau. The Im Schillertale protected area is located in Großlöbichau, covers 1.20 hectares, and was placed under protection on 2 March 2001. The comparison in size makes clear that these are two very different protected-area landscapes: one is extensive, while the other is considerably smaller.

A Portal with a Year That Needs Explaining

A small Romanesque entrance portal is located in the north wall of St. Bartholomew’s Church. The year 1347 refers to the addition of the Gothic choir, not to the dating of the portal: the choir was remodeled around 1500. This brings together different historical references in a single architectural feature. Anyone interested in architecture can distinguish between the portal’s Romanesque style, the Gothic choir, and its later remodeling.

A Planned Culinary Event

A Thanksgiving feast was planned for 12 noon on 27 September 2026 in the hall of the former Gembdenkeller in Großlöbichau. At least twelve people from the village were each due to cook and bake for ten people. Dishes planned included bigos, cabbage noodles, and pumpkin gnocchi, served as a generous buffet. Visitors and cyclists were also invited.

The Wider Saale-Holzland Destination

Beyond the local features of Großlöbichau, the wider Saale-Holzland destination offers a broader range of landscapes and activities. The Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive woodland. For hikers, several options are described: the SaaleHorizontale is a quality hiking trail that runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district; well-maintained hiking routes also lead through the Zeitzgrund. The Saale Cycle Route also runs north to south along the Saale through the district. Canoeing and inflatable-boat trips are among the most popular outdoor activities there.

The cultural attractions in Saale-Holzland also differ in their focus. Dornburg Castles form an ensemble of three castles from different stylistic periods. The Bauhaus Workshop Museum in Dornburg is housed in the former Bauhaus ceramics workshop in the Marstall building on the castle grounds. At the Bürgel Ceramics Museum, the permanent exhibition illustrates the history of Bürgel’s pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day; an audio guide leads visitors to 22 stops in Bürgel and Thalbürgel. Check its availability before your trip. Schkölen Water Castle combines a castle complex with a museum and changing exhibitions.

Other historical highlights include Hummelshain Hunting Lodge, once the hunting seat of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg, and Camburg Castle. It was first mentioned in a document in 1166; today, only the more than 30-meter-high keep remains. The Camburg Town Museum covers a broad span of history, from Stone Age hand axes to tools and weapons from various cultural groups and the town’s more recent history. Kemenate Orlamünde houses an exhibition on local history.
