Sülzhayn: Between the Sackberg Circular Trail and the Rhododendron Festival
Accommodation in Sülzhayn
Sülzhayn combines a distinctive village scene with a variety of ways to explore on foot. Half-timbered houses and the striking village church blend harmoniously into the surrounding countryside. There is also a precisely measured circular trail, the Thuringian section of the Harz Circular Trail through the local area, and an annual festival in the rhododendron park. You can shape your stay around walks, landscape views or village culture.

Hiking around Sülzhayn
The “Around the Sackberg” circular trail is 2.9 kilometres long and climbs 70 metres; its elevation ranges from 290 to 360 metres above sea level. From the spa gardens, the route follows shady forest paths and sunlit granite paving. There are also regularly spaced benches along the way. Its length, elevation change and varied surfaces give you concrete points of reference for fitting this loop into your plans.
The Thuringian section of the Harz Circular Trail, which runs through the Sülzhayn local area, offers another option for hiking. This means you can choose between a circular trail with a specified length and elevation and a local section of a named Harz trail. Accessible hiking trails in Sülzhayn allow wheelchair users to enjoy excursions with views of the Harz Mountains or the nearby karst area.
Village Scene and Rhododendron Festival
Half-timbered houses and the striking village church define the local scene and blend into the natural surroundings. Since 1996, the Sülzhayn Home and Cultural Association (Heimat- und Kulturverein Sülzhayn e. V.) has held the Rhododendron Festival in the rhododendron park every year on a Sunday in May. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the current local information for that year’s event before making plans.
Culture and Landscape in Ellrich
The wider travel destination of Ellrich offers its own cultural and landscape attractions. The St. Spiritus hospital complex in Ellrich includes the hospital church, which houses a late Gothic Marian altar from the 15th century. The city’s historic ensemble also includes Ravensturm, Spritzenhaus and Brauhof. Brauhof was redesigned in autumn 2000. The fire brigade museum in Ellrich was officially opened on 9 September 2001, the day of the Open Monument Day.
The Karst Hiking Trail in Ellrich also connects landscape and history. From Ellrich railway station, it leads to Juliushütte, the site of former gypsum factories and a former subcamp of a concentration camp, which is now a memorial. Circular Route 12 follows the signposted Karst Hiking Trail almost in its entirety between Ellrich and Walkenried, through the gypsum karst landscape in the Himmelreich Nature Reserve.
The Ellrich City Museum has a printing workshop. On request, the printing press can be set in motion so visitors can print a small personal souvenir. Check in advance whether this will be possible during your visit. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can focus on what matters most to you: Sülzhayn for the local trails and village scene described here, or Ellrich for its cultural and karst attractions.
