The history and furnishings of St. Viti
The church’s history dates back to the Middle Ages. In 1252, Count Heinrich II of Honstein transferred the right of patronage over St. Viti to Ilfeld Monastery. In 1333, the church foundation received confirmation from the Archbishopric of Mainz. These dates are accompanied by a turning point in the 18th century: the previous building was struck by lightning in 1733 and completely burned down. The church was rebuilt in 1736.
The furnishings also include some specific details. The wooden pulpit altar dominates the chancel, with twisted columns and carvings shaping its design. Two bells, rung by hand, hang in the tower. One was donated by the Nebelung family in 1964. If this particular detail is relevant to your plans, check in advance that the bells are still there.
Forest Stage and event date
Hesserode is home to the only forest stage in the city of Nordhausen. According to the city’s information, a yodeling contest with participants and guests from across the region takes place at the Hesserode Forest Stage on the first Sunday in June every year.
