Frankenhain is a base for extended hikes in the Thuringian Forest, including the 23-kilometre Flößgraben Route through a natural setting. You can rent a holiday apartment in Frankenhain.
Geographical setting
Frankenhain lies in a protected basin at an elevation of around 480 metres above sea level; the forest reaches right up to the settlement.
The surrounding area of Frankenhain includes the Ohrdruf forced labour camp, Gleichen Castle and the Arnstadt Palace Museum, as well as Brand, Schneekopf, Großer Beerberg and Oberer Beerberg. For visitors interested in history, the Ohrdruf forced labour camp is a specific point of reference.
Hallenberg lies in the wider regional surroundings of Frankenhain.
Frankenhain is a state-recognised health resort and is locally associated with the Thuringian Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the Thuringia Inselsberg–Drei Gleichen UNESCO Global Geopark.
Culture
The Frankenhain Heimatstube presents a reconstructed rural household, agricultural equipment, former farm buildings, historical photographs and material on the village’s economic development.
The Frankenhain Local History Museum features a geological collection of rocks, minerals and fossils, including specimens from the area around Frankenhain and from other regions of Thuringia.
Things to do
The GeoRoute 18 Mühlsteinweg Frankenhain is a themed hiking trail that explains millstones, hydropower, trade routes and mining; there are also information boards.
Frankenhain lies where the forested Thuringian Forest meets the flatter Ohrdrufer Platte. The Ohrdrufer Platte is described as a landscape suitable for leisurely cycling tours.
History
The village church of St Leonhard was built between 1719 and 1722 and contains ceiling paintings by the Gotha court painter Johann Heinrich Ritter.
