Marienglashöhle: Rock Layers and Crystals

The Marienglashöhle in Friedrichroda is a former mine dating back to the 18th century. Geological windows in its 110-metre-long tunnel reveal rock layers millions of years old. The Crystal Grotto adds a distinctive feature of its own: there, gypsum crystals up to 90 centimetres long sparkle. This means the same former mine offers two different glimpses into the history of the Earth side by side—the layers in the tunnel and the striking crystals in the grotto. Local History in a Half-Timbered House

The Friedrichroda Local History Museum is housed in a restored half-timbered building at Reinhardsbrunner Straße 6. As a shorter, clearly defined route, it can fit into your day differently from the Mining Trail, which focuses on mining traces and the views from the Gottlob and Klinkenstein. In addition to the palace, the Reinhardsbrunn ponds invite you to stroll through a landscape where history and nature come together.

Open-Air Theatre, Chapel and Bobsleigh Track

The Friedrichroda Mountain Theatre is an open-air stage at the foot of the Gottlob, with seating for 700 guests. Its programme includes concerts, theatre performances and musicals. The Reinhardsbrunn Palace Chapel regularly hosts high-calibre events. Both venues offer additional options for travellers who want to include culture in their Friedrichroda trip alongside excursions. The Old (Spießberg) Friedrichroda Bobsleigh Track, meanwhile, is one of Germany’s oldest bobsleigh and luge tracks and one of Europe’s few natural ice tracks.
