Martinfeld Castle was built in 1611 by the von Bodungen family as a manor house. This gives those interested in culture a specific historic building in the village to visit.

Culture and history

Martinfeld is home to the castle, the Catholic Church of St Ursula and her companions, as well as historic half-timbered houses around the village green. The church was built in 1723 and contains a Gothic altar centre from 1510, a baptismal font from 1600 and a Baroque altar from Beuren Abbey.

Martinfeld is documented in a deed of donation from 1071 associated with Emperor Henry IV and Hersfeld Abbey.

The pilgrimage site of Klüschen Hagis lies between Martinfeld and Wachstedt on the northern edge of the Westerwald.

Martinfeld lies in the Rosoppe Valley south of Heilbad Heiligenstadt; the Rosoppe is a tributary of the Frieda.

A second, 15.1 km stage of the Leine-Werra Nature Park Trail connects Martinfeld with Großbartloff and follows a route around the Westerwald.
