Hamberge: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
At the heart of Hamberge stands the church: it is considered a brick landmark probably built in 1327/1328, with a baptismal font made of Gotland limestone and an altar crafted by Hassenberg in Lübeck in 1722.
Culture and History
The fire of 1957 destroyed both the church’s Marcussen organ and the old wooden bell tower. At the northeastern corner of Hamberge Church, remains of an earlier baptistery and wayside chapel have been preserved. The preserved chapel area contains a lime-painted cross with a pilgrim symbol.
Concerts are held in Hamberge Church. Six stained-glass windows by Lübeck artist Erich Klahn commemorate citizens of Hamberge who fell in the First World War. In addition, five brass lights were individually designed around 1926 by the Lübeck artists Asmus and Martha Jessen.
Water and Activities
The Trave between Bad Oldesloe and Lübeck has a gentle current and no obstacles for paddlers. Hamberge has a canoe rest and bivouac station on the Trave. Beginners can also paddle upstream on the Trave in Hamberge. Next to the road bridge to Lübeck, the Hamberge canoe launch site provides convenient access to the water.
Via Travemünde, the Trave provides a navigable waterway connection to the Baltic Sea; via the Wakenitz, the connection extends into the Lake Schaalsee area. The Elbe–Lübeck Canal also provides a connection to the Elbe and its tributaries. The Trave can be paddled year-round for approximately 85 kilometres from Wardersee to the Baltic Sea; at some points, kayaks and canoes must be carried around obstacles.
Travereithof offers horse riding, horse boarding and riding school programs.
Regional Setting
The Hamberge parish is located along the Way of St. James and offers pilgrims accommodation in the parish hall. Stormarn lies between Hamburg and Lübeck and is accordingly well situated for day trips or short stays.
