Culture and History

Wilster's documented history dates back to 1163. In 1282, Wilster was granted Lübeck town rights and is described as one of the oldest towns in Schleswig-Holstein. The Old Town Hall is a Renaissance reconstruction dating from 1585. In the historic town halls, visitors can view culturally and historically valuable furniture, paintings and wall murals. The drainage mill offers tours and lectures and is described as Northern Germany's last functioning drainage mill.

The Wilsterau has infrastructure for access by canoe and SUP, including an access point on Hans-Prox-Straße near the stadium and five modernised launching and landing points along the river.

Markets and Traditions

The weekly market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Colosseumplatz. The farmers' market combines demonstrations of old agricultural machinery, traditional ring riding, performances by local associations and stalls offering produce, dairy products, meat, sausages and handicrafts.

Wilster is served directly by hourly trains on the Hamburg–Westerland route.
