Breitenburg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Breitenburg combines a distinctive history of its castle with wooded and open landscapes. Breitenburg Castle is one of the oldest surviving manor complexes in Schleswig-Holstein. The present-day castle developed from an agricultural estate established by Bordesholm monks in the mid-12th century on a geest ridge in the marshland. Breitenburg Castle acquired its L-shaped form in the 19th century.
History and Culture
The castle chapel at Breitenburg Castle is one of the first Protestant castle chapels in Holstein. The well in the castle courtyard was built in 1592 and took its present form in 1627; it is described as one of the most beautiful draw wells in Schleswig-Holstein. Breitenburg Castle is a significant regional attraction featuring a Hall of Mirrors, Knights’ Hall, Picture Gallery, old chapel, crowned castle well, Thorvaldsen Gallery and library.
Breitenburg Castle may not be entered without a prior appointment, as it is still inhabited by the noble family. The nearby area includes the Temple of Nordoe, a historic monument from the late 16th century near Breitenburg. It stands on a small hill and offers wide views over the surrounding landscape.
