Nature

Lake Schmalensee lies west of the town of Schmalensee and covers approximately 90 hectares. Schmalensee is part of the Bornhöved lake chain, which comprises six lakes and is also part of the Wankendorf lake district. Lake Bornhöved lies directly south of Schmalensee and is connected to Lake Schmalensee by a canal approximately 100 metres long.

Water

There is a public bathing area on the eastern shore of Lake Schmalensee. It includes a large sunbathing lawn, benches, a sandy beach, a jetty with a small water slide, toilets, a separate shallow-water area and play equipment.

History

The earliest documented mention of Schmalensee is dated 21 October 1296. A document dated 25 January 1343 records that Counts Hinrich and Nicolaus transferred their overlordship of Schmalensee to Preetz Monastery.

The former village ecological nature trail is to be called the Schmalensee Trail. The developing Schmalensee Trail is intended to include natural and historical stations such as the lake, hedges, meadows, an orchard, a peace oak with a memorial stone, an ice cellar, a burial mound, a dairy and a war memorial. As of 14 March 2026, the first signs had been put up; the official opening was still pending, and not all signs had yet been installed.

Things to Do

A signposted section of the 530-kilometre Mönchsweg long-distance cycle route runs through Schmalensee between Bornhöved and Stocksee. It combines cycling with the region’s medieval Christian heritage and historic churches.

The Land Tour runs from Ascheberg or Dersau to the agriculturally characterised Wankendorf lake district. It passes Lake Stocksee and Stockseehof Estate and highlights rural culture through the Ascheberg Mill, the villages and the farms.
