Nature

Kiebitzholmer Moor has been identified as a moor in Negernbötel. The moorland nature reserves in the Segeberg district can be explored on foot or by bicycle, with opportunities to observe moorland fauna. Kiebitzholmer Moor and Trentmoor is a 535-hectare Habitats Directive site in Schleswig-Holstein. It comprises degraded raised bogs that may still be able to regenerate naturally, as well as transition mires and quaking bogs.

In some peat cuttings of Kiebitzholmer Moor, raised-bog vegetation with peat mosses, cotton grass and bog rosemary can be found. The largely treeless lowlands of Kiebitzholmer Moor are breeding and feeding habitats for meadow birds such as meadow pipits, whinchats and skylarks. Cranes can occasionally be seen there. Galloways introduced from Scotland first appeared in Kiebitzholmer Moor in Schleswig-Holstein as landscape conservation grazers in 1976. Under the Habitats Directive, Kiebitzholmer Moor and Trentmoor is designated for the great crested newt, Triturus cristatus.

Geographical Setting

The watershed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea runs through the Kiebitzholmer Moor area. The Brandsau flows eastwards into the Baltic Sea, while the Rothenmühlenau drains via the Stör into the North Sea. Along the valley, the landscape of Kiebitzholmer Moor preserves clearly recognizable cliff edges.

History

Negernbötel was first mentioned in a document on 10 October 1198. The name element Botele or Bötel probably derives from the Low German word for a dwelling or settlement. South of the road between Negernbötel and Hamdorf are the long barrows with Neolithic megalithic tombs dating from around 3500 BC.

Several fortifications and defensive structures are particularly clearly visible east of Negernbötel's new community center. Embankments and ditches in the forests around Negernbötel are interpreted as military installations. East of the motorway, the historic defense system comprises two defensive lines and redoubts with external dimensions of 30 by 30 meters and internal dimensions of 15 by 15 meters; they were built to protect 20 to 30 soldiers. Remains of the Baroque military installations extend north of Negernbötel and Hamdorf across an area of 10 square kilometers.

Getting Around

A circular hiking route in Negernbötel surrounds the source area of the Faule Trave. This source area is surrounded by relatively steep slopes, and the route offers views over the wet lowlands around the source area. At the crossing of the Faule Trave, an information board explains the small tributary of the Trave.

Negernbötel is designated as a horse-friendly municipality. On 19 June 2026, a 1.6-kilometer-long cycle path between Negernbötel and Hamdorf along district road K 91 was officially opened.
