Hamdorf is situated on the Eider River on the Schleswig-Holstein geest ridge. The surrounding Eider lowlands have an established network of cycle paths for leisure activities and local recreation.

Landscape

The Eider-Treene-Sorge landscape area is characterised by extensive grassland lowlands, raised and lowland bogs, reed beds, wet meadows and near-natural shallow lakes.

Nature

The Bargstaller Au lowland is part of the Natura 2000 network. It provides breeding habitat for meadow birds and, from autumn to spring, is an important resting area for migrating waders and waterbirds. In early spring, larger groups of Bewick’s swans are regularly observed in the grassland areas of the Bargstaller Au lowland. The lowland is connected to the municipalities of Hamdorf and Elsdorf-Westermühlen.

Cycling and Water

On the southern side of the Kiel Canal, a cycle and footpath leads towards Kiel or Brunsbüttel. The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district offers five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 km in length.

The area around Hamdorf offers opportunities for recreational paddling. The Eider bathing area in nearby Breiholz provides an opportunity for swimming.

Getting There

Hamdorf is located directly on federal highway 203 between Heide and Rendsburg. There is also an hourly bus service. The mobility station at the petrol station provides real-time departure information and shelter from the weather.

History

Hamdorf was first mentioned in documents on 28 May 1285 under the name Hammathorp.

Archaeological evidence in the Hamdorf area includes Stone Age axes and arrowheads, hearths and fire pits, an urn cemetery and two megalithic tombs.
