Schwartbuck is located between Lake Selent and the Baltic Sea and has more than 800 years of documented history. The village was first mentioned in 1216 as “SUARCE PUC”; it later developed into an estate and farming village. In the Mühlenau Valley, areas were withdrawn from agricultural use and placed under nature conservation.

Culture and History

The view from the L 165 towards the Baltic Sea encompasses the imposing buildings of Schmoel Estate, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Nature

The Schmoel coastal lagoons serve as undisturbed moulting, resting, breeding and feeding habitats for wading and water birds. The Schmoel Coastal Nature Reserve covers 50 hectares and combines a beach ridge, coastal lagoons lined with brackish-water reeds, coastal grassland and other characteristic habitats of the Baltic Sea.
