Nature

The Holmer Sandberge and Buttermoor FFH area includes sandy heathland, open dune grassland, dry heathland and wet heathland. The Holmer Sandberge also feature grassland, sandy heathland, dry grassland and wooded slopes with oak, silver birch and pine trees.

Buttermoor contains transitional mires and raised bogs capable of natural restoration and provides a habitat for endangered amphibian, reptile, dragonfly and bat species. A shallow body of water in the centre of the Holmer Sandberge provides a habitat for amphibians, reptiles and waterfowl.

Paths

The Holmer Sandberge can be explored along signposted paths. Three designated circular trails, each just under 9 kilometres long, lead through the Holmer Sandberge and Buttermoor area.

Culture and History

The local Holm heritage museum is housed in a restored old barn and presents historical objects on two floors, including a shoemaker’s workshop, an old kitchen and historical school furniture. The exhibition topics in the main building also include peat cutting.

An annexed coach house belonging to the Holm heritage museum shows how agriculture was practised in Holm in the past. The Holm heritage museum offers individual guided tours on request. The coat of arms of Holm commemorates a Bronze Age hoard of arm rings found within the municipality.

Nearby, the Wedeler Au cycling region offers six themed routes and lists the Holmer Sandberge among its destinations. A regional hiking route also runs nearby as an approximately 18-kilometre loop through Waldenau, the Klövensteen, Buttermoor and the Holmer Sandberge.
