Wangels lies between the Baltic Sea coast and the Bungsberg, surrounded by fields, meadows, hedgerows and small forests. The village is located near the Bungsberg Landscape Protection Area, a hilly landscape formed during the last Ice Age. Near Wangels, hiking and cycling trails lead through fields and forests and along small streams.
Weißenhäuser Brök is one of the largest dune areas on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1942, 57 hectares of Weißenhäuser Brök were designated as a nature reserve. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network, both as a Habitats Directive area and as a bird sanctuary. The visitor paths crossing Weißenhäuser Brök between the holiday centre and the beach areas are fenced off from the adjacent sensitive dunes. The nature reserve contains near-natural dry dune grasslands and heathland, which provide habitats for rare plant and animal species.
A small alder swamp near Wangels is an alder swamp forest in the Bungsberg Landscape Protection Area and is characterised by permanently wet, sometimes flooded conditions. The Baltic Sea Treehouse Hotel in Wangels is described as a nature-oriented retreat with 14 treehouses on a site of approximately 25 hectares and a two-kilometre-long nature trail.
The Weißenhäuser Börk nature reserve stretches along the Baltic Sea coast and has a historical connection with the Oldenburger Graben.
Leisure
The Weissenhäuser Strand holiday and leisure park offers families opportunities for swimming as well as sports and wellness activities. The pier at Weissenhäuser Strand is promoted as a place for relaxing walks. There is a water-skiing facility in the Wesseker See nature reserve.
Culture and History
The Wangelser Gilde, founded in 1838, preserves local traditions. Its traditional Whitsun festival includes a village procession, ceremonial shooting and an evening ball.
The Farver Mill was built in 1828 as a three-storey Dutch windmill and can be rented as holiday accommodation. The Oldenburger Graben is associated with its use as a waterway by Slavic communities more than 1,200 years ago.
Getting Around
The Baltic Sea coast, Weissenhäuser Strand, Hohwacht, Sehlendorf and Holstein Switzerland are described as being quickly accessible from Wangels. A published driving route from Hamburg to Wangels follows the A1 towards Lübeck, leaves the motorway at exit 17-Neustadt-Nord and then continues on the B501 towards Neustadt. Wangels can be reached by regional bus services; changing buses in Oldenburg in Holstein is possible.
