The nature trail in the Schwartau Valley is 2.5 kilometers long and includes information and interactive stations, including a Green Classroom designed as an intergenerational place of learning about native wildlife and plants, a boardwalk, a picture book, and a tree telephone. The nature experience area along the Schwartau also features information boards, tree-ring models, a bee wall, nesting boxes, and information about various biotope types.

Bad Schwartau’s parks, near-natural meadows and fields, level walking paths, and the Pariner Berg hill are presented as places for walking and exploring. Bicycle rental can be combined with cycling routes through forests to the Baltic Sea coast and into the Holstein Switzerland region. The mini-golf course in the spa park offers an outdoor activity for children.

Culture and History

The Georgskapelle, also known as the St. George Leper Chapel, is associated with a leprosarium dating from 1258 and received a chapel in 1289. Today, it is used for church services and small concerts. This High Gothic brick building features three pointed-arch windows on each side and a gabled roof.

The former courthouse on the market square is listed as a historic monument and was built in 1909/1910 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The Pythagoraeder, an artwork made of polished stainless steel and approximately 3.5 meters high, stands in the spa park.

Schwartau was officially recognized as a spa resort in 1913 and has been known as Bad Schwartau ever since.

The history of Schwartauer Werke in Bad Schwartau began in 1899; because of this company, Bad Schwartau is associated with the nickname “Marmalade City.”
