Pilgrimage Route and St. Mary’s Church

The Via Jutlandica East Route is described as a 155-kilometre pilgrimage route and is marked throughout with a stylised shell and yellow arrows. A pilgrimage chapel already stood at the site of Ahrensbök’s St. Mary’s Church before 1300; the church itself was first built in 1328. It invites visitors to observe historic signs from various centuries and the changing interior of the church. St. Mary’s Church is open during the day; pilgrim passport stamps are available at the church office and the rectory.

History and Remembrance

The Ahrensbök Memorial Site presents a permanent exhibition on five aspects of National Socialism and persecution in the region. It is an extracurricular place of learning that focuses particularly on conveying history to younger visitors. By prior booking, the memorial site offers guided tours for school and youth groups as well as for other groups. Ahrensbök Castle was built between 1593 and 1601 and demolished in 1765. The former castle park is one of the highlights along the routes through Ahrensbök.

Routes and Transport

A circular route leads through Dunkelsdorf, Ahrensbök, Gnissau and Cashagen. A second route runs from Scharbeutz via Raketau to Bad Schwartau and forms a circular course that includes Ahrensbök and nearby villages in the southern part of the municipality. Eight bus routes serve the municipality of Ahrensbök, all stopping in the central area of Ahrensbök. Bus services are concentrated mainly around school hours; during school holidays and at weekends, there are only a few connections.
