Sollwitt: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Pobüller Moor associated with Sollwitt has a peat layer up to seven metres thick; parts of it were reclaimed in 1927. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Sollwitt can then continue their search for accommodation.

Nature and Landscape

Pobüller Bauernholz is a protected landscape area on a flat terminal moraine ridge in the Husum-Bredstedt Geest. Covering approximately 152 hectares, it contains deciduous forest, wet meadows, moors and fields. The wetlands provide numerous bird species with breeding or resting habitats. Pobüller Bauernholz is designated as a NATURA 2000 site.

History

The documented settlement history of Sollwitt dates back to 1407. Flint tools and weapons indicate settlement since the Neolithic period, while iron slag points to prehistoric and early historic bog iron smelting in the area.

A Neolithic stone axe found near the road between Sollwitt and Süderhackstedt bears a decoration interpreted as a possible indication of ritual use.

Remains of older building structures have been preserved in the settlement area of Klein-Sollwitt. A hollowed-out stone may have served as a trough for crushing grain and grass seeds.

The four historic leasehold farms in Sollwitt originally belonged to the cathedral chapter, the Catholic church administration in Schleswig.

Local Culture

The Dingstock was used in peasant self-government to convene meetings or negotiations with the Bauervogt. The Dingstöcke from Sollwitt and Sollwittfeld had split ends in which written messages were attached; the messenger carried them from neighbour to neighbour.

The Ortskulturring Sollwitt-Pobüll has been active since 1953 and organises annual events and courses. In the municipal coat of arms, Pobüll is represented by a leafy tree referring to the nearby Pobüller Bauernwald.

The historic Herkules wind turbine in Pobüll was built in 1923 and commissioned in 1924. It had a 12-metre rotor, a 28-metre-high tower and a 13-kilowatt wind dynamo. It also powered an attached grain mill. The installation was connected to 120 installed lamps, a tower lamp for lighting the village, and eight electric motors for threshing and chopping.

Cycle Paths and Routes

Cycle paths connect Sollwitt with Viöl and Süderhackstedt. The GeestRundtour leads through the Pobüller Bauernholz protected landscape area and the Nordermoor to Sollwitt. It runs mainly along quiet side roads or farm tracks and avoids main roads wherever possible. The route is described as a 31.6-kilometre trail with a duration of 2 hours and 5 minutes.
