Culture and History

South of Oldenswort lies Hoyerswort Manor. It is described as the only manor house in the Eiderstedt region and has a sculpture park. The Eiderstedt Countryside Tour includes a detour to this manor house in Oldenswort.

St. Pankratius was built in the mid-13th century on an artificial hill as a Romanesque hall church with two small transepts. In the 15th century, the church was extended by additions to the eastern chancel area and the west tower. The triumphal cross group was created in 1491. There are also Gothic ceiling paintings and richly decorated Ivers choir stalls dating from 1589.

A former house at Dorfstraße 31 was built in 1610 in the style of the Dutch Renaissance.

The Local History Collection displays archaeological finds from the village mound of Tofting. Excavations uncovered three farmsteads there that had been continuously raised between the 2nd and 5th centuries. Tofting is protected as an archaeological cultural monument.

Ferdinand Tönnies was born near Oldenswort and, with his book Community and Society, published in 1887, produced the first explicitly sociological work in the German language. The writer Thusnelda Kühl spent her happiest and most productive period in Oldenswort and worked there as a teacher from 1897.

Nature

From the Mitteldeich dike, pedestrians and cyclists can see the Oldenswort foreland; the view extends across the protected area to the Eider.

Cycling and Paths

The 180-kilometre Wikinger-Friesen-Weg long-distance cycle route runs through Oldenswort. The Eiderstedt Countryside Tour is a cycling tour through the expansive marshland of North Frisia and includes a detour to the manor house in Oldenswort.
