Landscape
Arlewatt encompasses marshland and Geest landscapes. The Geest is characterised by sandy and loamy soils as well as an extensive network of hedgerows. Former gravel extraction has created steep banks, lakes and areas of natural development; burial mounds provide evidence of settlement in the Bronze Age.
Culture and history
The Arlewatt Hof is a Haubarg built in 1735 and the northernmost Haubarg in North Frisia. It is the surviving farm building of the former Arlewatt estate.
The former Arlewatt Castle was rebuilt after Duchess Augusta acquired the estate in 1627. It is described as a model for Theodor Storm’s 1884 novella “Grieshuus”.
The surrounding area of Arlewatt is home to the Bredstedt telecommunications tower and Sandesberg. In the wider regional area around Arlewatt are Gottorf Castle, the State Museum, Hallig Habel, Sieverstedt, St. Petri Church, Wolfenbüll and Nordhöhe.
