Culture and History

At the Museum Kunst der Westküste, changing exhibitions present Scandinavian and German artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum garden contains historic trees and old Föhr rose varieties. The museum was founded in 2009 by Frederik Paulsen, whose family originated from Alkersum on Föhr.

The Ferring Foundation is open to everyone and offers groups guided tours of its premises. Scientific lectures are held monthly in its library, covering topics ranging from archaeology to naming traditions on the North Frisian Islands.

The library of the Ferring Foundation contains around 10,000 books on Frisian research, maritime history and philology. As a reference library, it is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Visitors have access to workstations, a copier, a microfilm scanner and free Wi-Fi.

Alkersum’s Hualewjonken organises ring riding for guests, card evenings and meetings with other Hualewjonken clubs on Föhr. The Föhr Riding and Driving Club offers courses, club competitions and smaller events.

Nature and Trails

Alkersum lies between Föhr’s geest and marsh landscapes. Green marsh meadows stretch across the Alkersum Geest. Rabbits, waterfowl, hares and deer can be found in the marsh areas, where hedges and rows of trees provide shelter.

The village has signposted bridleways, riding stables, indoor riding arenas and stables. Along the Alkersum Marsh Trail, there are rest areas where visitors can listen to nature and watch the sunset.

Local

The Föhrer-Inselkäse Farm in Alkersum processes milk year-round into seven varieties of cow’s milk cheese. The farm shop includes a small summer café serving coffee, sweet treats and freshly prepared cheese sandwiches.

In addition to its own cheeses, the farm shop at the Föhrer-Inselkäse Farm sells homemade jam and egg liqueur, as well as Föhr eggs, sausage, regional wines, pasta, mustard and oils. Grethjens Gasthof welcomes guests and museum visitors in its indoor spaces and in the sheltered museum garden.

Visiting

From the mainland, Dagebüll Mole can be reached by train or car. Ferries operated by Wyker Dampfschiff-Reederei then travel to Wyk on Föhr.

At the Museum Kunst der Westküste, the main exhibition area is accessible to visitors with disabilities. There is also an accessible toilet, a lift and ramps. The museum has two bicycle parking areas.
