Culture and History

In the historic centre of Wesselburen, the street layout shown by Johann Mejer on his town map of 1648 is still in place today. The early settlement landscape included farmsteads and fishermen’s houses on dwelling mounds; the first ring dike was built around 1000.

The Hebbel Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the dramatist Friedrich Hebbel, who was born in Wesselburen. It presents the poet’s life and work in ten rooms. Five historically designed rooms show living conditions in Wesselburen and Vienna. The facilities also include a library with around 6,000 titles, a newspaper archive and research workstations.

St. Bartholomew’s is a historic cultural church with a distinctive onion dome that is visible from far across the marshes. The church contains a sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century and a preserved Gothic sacristy. It also houses an organ by Johann Hinrich Klapmeyer dating from 1741, which was reconstructed by 2011 in the style of its original builder.

Guided historical tours of Wesselburen also include themed tours that begin at the tourist information office in front of the old town hall. Free guided church tours are offered on Thursdays from May to September.

The Dithmarschen museum landscape comprises 19 professionally and voluntarily managed museums in 11 towns. Wesselburen is represented by the Hebbel Museum and the Cabbage Museum at the Kohlosseum.

Culinary Culture

The Kohlosseum in Wesselburen produces vegan organic sauerkraut and combines a farmers’ market with a museum. Visitors can take part in a guided tour of the cabbage workshop and finish it with a tasting of the products.

The museum presents historical and contemporary cabbage cultivation as well as historical and contemporary cabbage processing. This includes a reconstruction of a cabbage-cutting facility from Marne.

Nature

The Wesselburen holiday region provides access to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and offers guided mudflat walks to the sand islands of Blauort and Isern Hinnerk. Wesselburen is the meeting point.

In the wider regional surroundings, the area where the Eider meets the North Sea, the Eider Barrage and the Katinger Watt are part of the landscape. Habitats between the sea and river dikes provide retreats for rare bird and plant species.

Routes and Getting There

The Hebbel circular hiking trail is marked with a quill symbol, uses the church’s onion dome for orientation and can be used for hiking, jogging, Nordic walking and cycling.

The “Frisians and Dithmarschers” route is a 37.07-kilometre, easy circular tour for cycling and e-bike tours. It lists Wesselburen’s market square as the destination. Wesselburen railway station provides access to Deutsche Bahn regional services.
