Volsemenhusen’s settlement history dates back to the 12th century. Early linear villages were built on raised residential mounds to protect against inland flooding; the first dike line was constructed in 1581.

Volsemenhusen is part of the human-shaped Südermarsch landscape. It is characterised by minor differences in elevation and an extensive artificial drainage system that supports agricultural use and flood-protected settlements.

Volsemenhusen is connected to the higher-level hiking and cycling network, including sections of the marketed North Sea Coast Cycle Route EV 12. Designated cycle routes run through the municipality along the L 142, L 173 and L 144 roads. The tourist Marschenbahn cycle rail route from Marne to St. Michaelisdonn also passes through Volsemenhusen. It uses four-wheeled rail vehicles powered by bicycle-like pedals.

The surrounding area of Volsemenhusen is home to the Hügelgrab Cultural Heritage Monument and the Historische Ringtränke. In the wider regional area are the Schanze Cultural Heritage Monument and Heiligenstedten Castle.
