Landscape
Schalkholz is situated on a glacial push moraine, where significant local differences in elevation occur. A well-preserved hedgerow landscape with gentle hills and extensive lowlands gives the area its characteristic geest landscape. The Schalkholz glacial tongue basin is a glacially formed lowland surrounded by push moraines and containing an inner raised bog.
Culture
Numerous yellow brick houses dating from before the First World War have been preserved in the village. The Peace Oak, planted in 1871, stands at the historic crossroads in the village center.
The Schalkholz passage grave is the southernmost example of the oval type of Nordic passage graves. Funnel Beaker pottery and a hoard of flint blades were found during excavations. In November 2021, the passage grave was returned to Schalkholz, near its original location.
The Schalkholz long barrow LA 58 is a legally protected cultural monument under Section 8 of the Schleswig-Holstein Monument Protection Act of 2015. At the western edge of the oak forest near Schalkholz, a well-preserved older Bronze Age burial mound has also survived.
