Landscape

In the Kleve area southeast of Sankt Michaelisdonn, the landscape documents the postglacial geological development of Dithmarschen. The Kleve nature reserve is part of the European Natura 2000 network. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle and includes two viewpoints.

Culture and History

The historic Hoper windmill “Edda” is a landmark of Sankt Michaelisdonn. It was built in 1842 as a Dutch windmill. The easiest way to reach it is on foot, as only footpaths and farm tracks lead to it. The Klev viewpoint at Hoper windmill offers views over Sankt Michaelisdonn and the marshland.

The Claus Harms monument on the market square commemorates the theologian and miller’s son Claus Harms. St. Michaelis Church was built in 1611 and gave Sankt Michaelisdonn its name. The church contains an altar dating from 1693 and a baptismal font from the late seventeenth century.

The Masonic Museum is housed in the former Westdorf primary school. It presents the history of Freemasonry and displays related exhibits from around the world.

Things to Do

The Marschenbahn draisine runs between Sankt Michaelisdonn and Marne along the former railway line. The Golf Club am Donner Kleve has an 18-hole course and a public nine-hole short course. Sankt Michaelisdonn also has a heated outdoor swimming pool with a 25-metre swimming pool, diving board, slide pool and paddling pool.

Four signposted circular hiking trails of varying lengths lead around Sankt Michaelisdonn, across the Kleve and through Christianslust and the Gudendorf Forest. A bicycle service station is available at the tourist information office in Sankt Michaelisdonn.

Getting There

Bus connections from Sankt Michaelisdonn run to Marne, Friedrichskoog, Meldorf and Brunsbüttel. The town also has a rail connection on the Hamburg–Itzehoe–Heide–Westerland/Sylt route.
